Welcome to the City of Lake City, Fleet Maintenance Department

In the automotive repair industry, one must always stay mindful, of year to year changes in automotive design, system changes, diagnostic repair methods and techniques.  In order to meet these pending changes we must have well trained, dedicated technicians and have updated, trouble shooting and diagnostic equipment.

Our mission is to continue to train our employees through hands on experience and academic study in class room settings.  When our technicians are properly equipped and educated, this proves to be valuable, because job outsourcing is kept to a minimum, thus saving the taxpayers money.

Our mission is to continue to develop our technician’s people skills, after all, every employee that operates a city vehicle, is our customer and will be treated with dignity and respect.  Our mission is to continue to promote, high moral and low stress in my department, this is accomplished through my open door policy, dialog, rewarding worthy accomplishments and simple effective leadership.  These actions equate to excellent technician management and retention.

I strive for a mission driven department. It has proven to be more productive than a rule driven organization.  Mission driven organization, I feel produce better results, more effective than rule driven.  With a mission driven department comes flexibility, control over moral, innovation and more.

General George S. Patton once said, with effective leadership a well communicated mission, good preparation, it won’t be necessary to tell employees how to do things, explain your expectations and what you want them to achieve and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.

Our Fleet consists of approximately 215 cars, vans, light, medium and heavy duty trucks, single and combinations.  We also are responsible for maintaining approximately 45 pieces of light, medium, and heavy equipment.

Our department is responsible for our Preventative Maintenance (P.M.) making major and minor repairs on the city’s fleet, light and heavy construction equipment.  City employees are required to bring their vehicles into our facility every three thousand miles, for servicing and P.M.

Our fuel control and service techs make daily rounds to construction sites to assist in field support, check equipment, address any requests and make those repairs that do not require equipment to be transported to our facility.  We are also equipped to handle after hours and weekend emergencies when necessary.

Our department is very environmentally friendly, all used oil is carefully drained and properly stored, our used filters are crushed to ¼ of the original size, with a filter crusher and are stored in a proper container until such time the used oil container and filter container are at a maximum capacity, it is then properly disposed of by TexPar Energy, a company out of Bainbridge, GA.

When a vehicle or equipment cooling system requires repairs, the cooling system is properly drained in a suitable container, transferred to a used coolant container, where it is stored until the container is at maximum capacity.  The coolant is then recycled and
Reused, saving dollars in the process.

When air conditioning systems require major repairs, the system is discharged, if charged, with a recycling machine, the repairs made, and the Freon is then recycled on site and returned to the vehicle.  These practices not only save our tax payers money, it saves our environment and that is great.
